Wine excursion to El Hierro and La Gomera

This month, many of the recommended wines lead us to the Canary Islands, and especially to El Hierro, a small and rugged island that hides a surprising viticultural richness. Visiting its wineries and tasting its wines is a constant journey of discovery, where landscape and wine engage in an intimate and sincere dialogue.

Viticulture in El Hierro is a clear example of heroic winemaking. The vineyards spread across steep slopes and poor volcanic soils, where each vine seems to cling to the land. Here, the work is manual, patient, and demanding, shaped by scarce rainfall, the trade winds, and a topography that offers no respite. Mechanisation is practically non-existent, and each harvest is the result of months of quiet effort.

Adding to this challenging landscape is a heritage of lesser-known native grape varieties, some of them almost exclusive to the island, cultivated in small plots and with very low yields. These are varieties perfectly adapted to the territory, capable of clearly expressing the volcanic character and the influence of the ocean. From them emerge singular wines, in limited production, with a marked personality and a deep identity.

Tasting these wines is like reading the landscape of El Hierro in the glass: tension, minerality, salinity, and an elegant austerity that faithfully reflects their origin. In a wine world that is increasingly homogeneous, El Hierro represents a form of winemaking defined by resistance and authenticity.
